Biography
- Immanuel Kant was born and raised in Konigsberg, now part of northeast Germany.
- Kant was the fourth of nine children.
- Baptized 'Emanuel', he changed his name to 'Immanuel' after learning Hebrew. His religion was very important for him and we can see it reflected in his teachings.
- Kant was brought up in a Pietist household that stressed intense religious devotion, personal humility, and a literal interpretation of the bible. This can explain us the reason why he began to bring God and immortality into his teachings.
- Immanuel spent his whole life near his home, apparently he never ventured more than 100 km from his birthplace. His life was characterized by a routine of study and work. This shows how strict and organized he lived his life and this could be the reason why the majority of his teachings emphasize in moral duty. Since he didn't travel or go any where far from home we can take this as a reason why his teachings involve autonomy, all his major activities he might have done them by himself, he was a very independent person.
- Kant studied in a local university and made a meager living working as a private tutor. Since he was very popular between the students, he started working as a private teacher at the university, he was always able to make ends meet. He was finally hired at the age of 46 years old as a professor of logic and metaphysics.
- He died in 1804.
